Poetry, A Healer – A Poem for World Poetry Day 3/21/2022

I was inspired to write this poem last evening and finished it today on World Poetry Day.

Here is a link for listening to the poem: https://vm.tiktok.com/TTPdPvcRCS/

I’d love to hear your comments about poetry and how poetry can be a healer as a creative art.

“Poetic Expressions in Nursing: Sharing the Caring”

Promo for “Poetic Expressions in Nursing: Sharing the Caring”

“When it’s all said and done, there’s no profession as diverse, as the art and the science of being a nurse” -Susan J. Farese, MSN, RN

Nursing is an incredibly enriching yet stressful profession and besides being a science, it is truly an art. This second edition of Poetic Expressions in Nursing: Sharing the Caring is dedicated to all nurses – past, present, and future. It is a celebration of nursing and a tribute to nurses, especially during this unexpected, unprecedented pandemic. Covid-19 took its toll on nurses during 2020 and hopefully the impact of stress and burnout will be lessened with time and the arts. Poetry can be a therapeutic and cathartic tool for nurses and other caring professions to deal with the angst, stressors or joys that accompany the profession“.  – Susan J. Farese, MSN, RN

Originally published in 1993,  Poetic Expressions in Nursing: Sharing the Caring now has a 2nd edition and is available online (eBook and paperback, and audiobook).

Butterflies on Parade – Haiku & Photos: San Diego Zoo Safari Park

I have been delighted with some great perks and benefits with my Keepers Club Membership  at the  San Diego Zoo Safari Park!

We visited a great new exhibit, “Butterfly Jungle” at the Safari Park in Escondido, California the other day…

Please note: The Butterfly Jungle is only open now through April 15th from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

A few words to the wise! Be prepared to wait! This is a very popular exhibit! (For an extra fee of $20 you can move up in line).

Once you’re inside, they will allow you to marvel at and photograph these lovely colorful butterflies.

What a hoot! The butterflies love bright colors, so feel free to wear them! They will gladly land on you! You’ll chuckle with delight!

It’s a blast!

Here’s my #Haiku to kick off National Poetry Writing Month (#NaPoWriMo) and Global Poetry Writing Month (#glopowrimo):

Haiku: Sweet Butterflies

by

SJF Communications

Fickle flutterers

Quick, vividly colorful

Dainty butterflies

They might land on you

If so, they invite your grin

Butterflies marvel!

Oh…another important note (per the ambassadors): No touching the butterflies or taking them out of the area with you!

These sweet creatures are endangered, so there will be several ‘exit stations’ where the Safari Park Ambassadors will have you “turn around’ and  ‘shake it out’ to ensure that no butterflies are resting on your clothes, backpacks, hats, etc!

It’s all worth it though! Although there was an elusive few that flew so quickly that by the time I had my camera ready they were gone!

I am looking forward to going again soon! Hurry, the exhibit closes on April 15th!

The Day Room at Night: A Haiku

The Day Room at Night:

A Haiku

By Susan J. Farese, MSN, RN,

Veteran (former MAJ) Army Nurse Corps

SJF Communications  October, 2014

Published by O-Dark Thirty 2015

(Inspired by many late night chats with soldiers

…as a nurse on night shift)

Always on night shift

Out of bed to the day room

Anxiety plus.

So I challenged them

Put away that cigarette

And just chat with me.

Stories would abound

Sometimes, even tears would flow.

Cathartic rivers.

You wouldn’t believe

the magnitude, their missions

Poignant and heartfelt.

That was the 80’s

Before the world changed that day

On 9-11

Imagine, right now

Post-traumatic  stress endured

And shared with no one.

So don’t be afraid

To reach out to a veteran

Pretend it’s night shift.
